10 Ways To Quickly Reduce Stress

We all experience stress but it’s how we manage stress that ultimately determines our quality of life. 

It could be argued that the root cause of stress is fear – fear that you will not be able to pay your bills, fear that your partner will leave you, fear that you will lose your job, fear that people will think of you in a certain way, fear of failure, fear of growing old, fear of dying – the list is endless. When you combine a whole load of these it’s no wonder our stress levels can be so high.

The good news is that no matter how stressed you feel there are ways to combat it and feel more peaceful and able to handle it all.

Here are 10 ways to feel less stressed:

#1 – Don’t Get Too Attached

It can really help not to feel too attached to things. Once you accept that everything will eventually change, you will worry less. Whether it’s your relationship, your job/career, your standard of living, or even your appearance, it’s inevitable that all of these things will eventually change. Accepting the inevitable flow of life will eliminate a lot of the stresses that comes with attachment to things.

#2 – Focus On The Positives

Try to focus on the what’s going good and not on what’s not, especially with things that are outwith your control. When we always look for what’s wrong in things we will always find something, but by focusing on the negatives you might be overlooking the fact that on the whole, things are actually looking really good.

#3 – Get Out More

Too much time indoors is not natural and it’s not healthy. Simply going outside a for a walk, preferably around nature, is a great way to de-stress and unclutter the mind.

#4 – Breathe Deep

Deep breathing has been proven to reduce cortisol levels, which in turn reduces stress & anxiety. When you are feeling stressed or anxious, take just 5 minutes to breathe in slowly and deeply (right down into your abdomen until your lungs are full) and then slowly exhale. Even just a few minutes of this will bring you back to a more relaxed state. The beauty is this can be done anywhere, any time!

#5 – Exercise

Even with a busy lifestyle it is important to find time for exercise. The rush of endorphins will instantly reduce your stress levels and you may even feel a euphoric high if you go at it hard enough. Daily exercise is highly effective at regulating stress, plus you’re body will thank you for it too.

#6 – Spark Some Scents

Try lighting some scented candles or oils. Aromatherapy is a tried and tested method of reducing stress. Lavender in particular has great relaxing qualities.

#7 – Take A Nap

Research has shown that sleep reduces cortisol levels, so don’t feel guilty about putting everything to one side and taking a nap from time to time. It will also help you be more productive after it, which may help with the causes of your stress.

#8 – Get A Pet

Scientific studies have shown that dog owners are less stressed. Spending time with your pet is a great way to take your mind off of things and helps you not take life too seriously.

#9 – Get Creative

Set aside some time for working on arts, crafts, music, writing, or whatever your passion is. Focusing the mind and channeling your creative energy into something you love has great stress-reducing benefits.

#10 – Listen To Music

Studies show that listening to music lowers blood pressure and reduces stress hormones. Find time to relax and listen to the music you love.
